Symbiosis Summer School

A first of its kind in India, Symbiosis Summer School (SSS) programmes are multidisciplinary curriculum that promote intercultural opportunities for both students and faculty. Unique in its quality, this residential summer school programme offers a learning environment with regional, national and international faculty, within the beautiful Lavale campus in Pune. With expertise in their respective fields, the faculty will deliver course content through innovative teaching methods which offer students thoughtful inquiry, robust skill development, and insightful discourse.

The summer school programmes are short intense courses designed to foster the development of knowledge and skills, across a variety of interest areas. This is developed through a course curriculum that balances academic content with the richness of cultural and social activities. About Us

Inspired by the ideals of 'Vishwa Bharati' of Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore and 'Antar Bharati' of Sane Guruji and with a deep desire to help foreign students, an idea of 'Symbiosis' was conceived by Padma Bhushan Dr. S.B. Mujumdar in the year 1971. The motto of Symbiosis is 'Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam' and truly for the foreign students at Pune it is a 'Home away from Home'.

The Symbiosis Centre of International Education, is responsible for promoting this idea and also facilitates the easy settling in of international students at all our campuses. Testimonials

If you ask me to put my experience at Summer School in just few words, then I guess I'll surely be at war with words. Although, it was the credibility of brand 'Symbiosis' that made me enroll for the Programme, but after my stay at Summer School I can very confidently say that I could not have enrolled for a better Programme than this.
Its very rare to find such an organized and supportive management teamed with an interesting and experienced set of faculty, and I guess that was the only reason that made us learn and work much more then I thought I could ever do ... !!
Summer School was not just about what we did ... It was rather about what we can do now !

The World of Masks: The Fundamental Principles of Theatrical Creation

Faculty: Pedro Ilgenfritz
Lecturer - Acting & Critical Practice
Faculty of Creative Industries and Business
Department of Performing and Screen Arts
Unitec, New Zealand

This workshop gives the participants the opportunity to experience the basic techniques of theatre improvisation through Neutral and Larval masks. It enables the student to understand the principles behind narrative structure, physical construction of characters and the pleasure of playing in front of an audience.

Masks are a great tool to help performers to discover the power of silence on stage. Students will be studying the dynamics of movement, articulation of gesture, basic laws of conflict and audience interaction. A great opportunity for any one who wants to develop acting skills, communication or simply overcome shyness.

The course will look at two kinds of masks: Neutral and Larval masks. Neutral mask sets up all the rules for mask improvisation, it helps the performer to understand the movement from reality to fiction. It is a fabulous tool to learn how to create clean stage movements, clear gestures and to develop stage presence. The Larval mask is the next step after the Neutral mask. This mask allows the performer to explore very simple situations and characters. Larval masks are very subtle and poetic; they can move the audience to laughter or tears with very little effort!

The journey into the world of masks is an invaluable opportunity any student to discover the subtleties and poetic force of their presence, clarity of intention and the conventions of drama.

Requirements for students of theater:

  • Dress requirements: all participants must wear black pants and black tops with long sleeves.
  • This workshop requires intense engagement, participants should attend all classes.

West African Drumming (Djembe) Module:

This workshop is aimed at drumming enthusiasts who would like to push their curiosity and knowledge to the next level.

The workshop will help enhance their rhythmic fluency and break down concepts that are considered difficult in a very hands-on way. We will enter the realm of West-African Drumming through the Djemmbe and the Dununs and provide an experience of a very powerful, earthy and dynamic nature of traditional Wes- African Drumming. The Djembe is a goblet-shaped drum made in one piece from a hollowed out tree trunk. It is covered with shaved goatskin. The degree of the tension on the skin is regulated with the rope that attached it to the wood and the tension also regulated the pitch of the drum. The Djembe is played with the hands and different tonalities are achieved based on hand positions and the manner in which one strikes the skin.

The Dununs (bass drums) have a cylindrical boy which is also carved in one piece from a tree trunk. It is covered with cowhide on both sides. The musician strikes the drum with a wooden stick which is held in one hand and the other hand simultaneously hold a metal stick that is used to strike an iron bell to the side of the Dunun. Once gets two tonalities from these drums; the tone and mute/ muffled tone. The biggest Dunun is called the Dununba, the middle one, the Sangban and the smallest, the Kenkeni.

The Djembe is a universal symbol of joy and is widespread in West-Africa and now, the world. Music, song and dance is synonymous to life and every rhythm played has a relevance and significance, in this module we will learn basics of reading rhythm (staff and box notations); technique on how to play the Djembe and Dununs; traditional West-African rhythms and also improvisation technique.

Course to be taught by:
Varun Venkit, founder / director of Taal Inc., who is a djembefola, a grade 8 drumkit player, clinical psychologist, percussionist, drum circle facilitator and master NLP practitioner. He is an advance level student of grandmaster Djembefola Mamady Keita.

Come. Drum. Be One.

Western Dance:

Course conducted by Sandip Soparrkar.

A fun filled dance education course by Dance India Dance Judge Sandip Soparrkar.

  • Dance is not just a hobby. It is a way to understand the culture and traditions of different states and countries.
  • A platform to learn authentic and pure dance forms and develop correct technique, form & posture.
  • Dance is now a part of Olympic Games & Asian Games. This course will help prepare students to reach an international level.
  • An overall development not just by using dance as a medium, but also education about etiquette and manners on the dance floor.
  • To build character and help develop physical and mental fitness.
  • To understand music, instruments and develop musicality for various dance forms.

Dance is a terrific team building activity. It also provides an expressive outlet- both physically and emotionally.
(Any 3 of the following will be covered in the course)

Cha Cha Cha- The Cha Cha Cha has no particular country of origin. It is an offshoot of this dance called the ‘Mambo’. A FLIRTY… NAUGHTY… SPICY and a very RHYTHMICAL dance, filled with lots of zest, hip action and high speed maneuvers. The mood of Cha Cha is – ‘NAUGHTY’

Jive- Like the cha cha, the Jive has no country of origin. The mix of the Jive is similar to BOOGIE, JITTERBUG, WEST COAST SWING, LINDY HOP and most of all the ROCK ‘n’ ROLL… To dance the Jive effectively, one must be able to do a great mix of all… the Jive is a FUN FILLED… CARE FREE… and a RELAXED dance…The mood of Jive is – ‘FUN’

Rumba- The Rumba comes from Cuba, so it is also known as the Cuban Rumba. The fascinating rhythms, bodily expressions, extended long legs and hem line enhance its romantic mood, making the Rumba the spirit and soul of Latin American music and dance. That is why we say that the Rumba is the most popular Latin American Dance. The mood of the Rumba is – ‘LOVE’

Samba- Even though the Samba is originally from Africa, it is the national dance of Brazil, so it is also known as the Brazilian Samba. Even today, the Samba is danced solo on the streets of Brazil’s Rio de Janeiro during carnivals. It has a lot of upper and lower body movement with a lot of head gear and very little on the body as costumes. The Samba is said to be RHYTHMIC… ANIMALISTIC… EXOTIC… and SEXY… and is popular for its variety of rhythms and body isolation moves. The mood of Samba is – ‘FESTIVE’.

Salsa- Salsa means sauce, a mixture of lots of influences of dances and music mainly from the Latin Afro-Cuban Culture. Salsa is a popular social dance throughout the Carribean, Central America, South America as well as in North America, Europe, Australia, and some countries in Asia and the Middle East. Salsa's roots are based on Cuban Son, specifically to the beat of Son Montuno in the 1920s. However, as it is a popular music, it is open to improvisation and thus it is continuously evolving.Today, there are three major salsa styles, namely Cuban Salsa (Casino), New York Style ("Mambo On2"), and Los Angeles Style ("On1"). Other Salsa branches include Colombian Salsa ("Cali-Style") and Miami-Style Salsa.

Indian Dance:

Learn the Uday Shankar Style of Dance OR Bharatnatyam

UDAY SHANKAR STYLE OF DANCE
Uday Shankar broke all boundaries of existing society and created a new genre in Indian Dance which did not exist before – the genre of Indian Creative Dance. Traditionally, Indian Dance was more or less divided into two specific categories – classical and folk. Through his compositions, Uday Shankar introduced his own unique movements and used them to depict various themes. The movements he created were sometimes inspired by music and at other times by gestures of real life. They were Indian in spirit without being provincial in nature. They incorporated the finesse and sophistication of the classical styles as well as the liveliness of the folk dance form. With his foray into dance he also denounced the social stigma attached to dance as his first troupe mainly consisted of his family members and friends. Since he hailed from the Brahmin caste, it meant that his troupe essentially comprised Brahmins, like him.

What is the carbon footprint of one's building, industry, city, village or country? Can I do something about it as an individual, as a member of my community, as a member of the international community?

A great opportunity to meet like-minded people and inspiring faculty members while you explore a variety of ways to improve your writing process and enhance creativity.

The course content covers basic literary terms and theory and genres ( poetry, fiction, non fiction, short stories, articles, plays , etc.). The course is specifically designed for those who wish to enhance their writing skills, write creatively and seek guidance while learning more about language and literature. Our faculty believes in an integrated approach to literature and thankfully we are now collapsing genres -- prose poems for instance !

Through interactive, hands-on sessions, participants will learn simple but effective techniques of character crafting, setting creation, circumstance exploration, openings and closures. As important as this, they will learn how to draw on their own experience, vocabulary and perspective. Interactive sessions are perfect as you travel on your journey to becoming a better, more ‘aware’ writer. Classes will involve participants in the exciting process of actually writing and undertaking the journey from the blank page to the story and beyond.
